Is there really a competition. Okay, here is where I vent. For some reason cheerleading coaches don't like me. I think it may have something to do with the fact that I consider cheerleading great entertainment. I mean seriously, I get a great laugh everytime I watch them. I also get a kick out of how defensive they are about it being sport. I don't usually comment to this effect because I know that there are some cheerleading teams that actually COMPETE and are successful, but I have not been around this type of cheerleading. The type I am referring to is the cheerleading team that plans two hour practices, but stands around talking 75% of the time. This type of team is more interested in what their hair and makeup look like than actually cheering for the team. This type of team spends more time in the concession stand than on the sidelines. This type of team sits on the bleachers instead of standing and getting the crowd into the game. This type of team has no idea how the game they are cheering for is played. This type of team takes gym time from real sports and uses one corner to clap their hands and stomp their feet. This type talks more about themselves in their cheer instead of the team they are supposed to be cheering for. And my biggest pet peeve, they REFUSE to cheer for any girls teams! What is that! Actually I think that speaks for itself.
Anyway all that to say this-the cheerleading coach here does not like me at all. She seems to think I have it out for her, but really she makes me laugh. Everything is SO....dramatic! You know they type. Well I am really looking forward to this afternoon, because I have reserved the gym for my club team and she has told her girls that they will be in the gym this afternoon. Oh Well, I usually avoid conflict, but this is just hilarious!
So give me your opinion!

Now, now Ginny. Why don't you just share your REAL feelings? That hole you're digging is getting pretty deep! LOL!!!
My opinion? Cheerleading has changed so much since I was in high school! Cheerleading "used" to be where your goal as a "cheerleader" was to get the crowd excited and loud; cheering for your team, urging them on. Now its not that at all.
Today's cheerleader's main goal is to look cute, make sure they do things to put the attention on them --not the team-- and to see how many dangerous acrobatic moves they can pile into a "cheer" for the team.
So, so sad. This is happening at all levels--not just the high school level. The pep squad at our school actually "cheer" more for the teams even though most of these young girls don't have a clue what the game is about....
So, so sad. They're really missing out on fun!
Do I think cheerleading is a sport? yes, sometimes. Do I think cheerleading at Christian schools is a sport? 99% no way.
At the last school we were at in Florida (a Christian school btw), the cheerleading squad consisted of about 20 people - girls AND boys and they competed nationally. And they were really good. They worked in the off-season, hired a choreographer to design their dance and a sound guy to mix their music for them. They were required to attend sessions at a local gymnastics studio and every one of them could perform as a gymnast. Cheering at games was a secondary job of theirs. Their main goal was to compete against other cheerleading squads and win competitions. And isn't that what defines a sport? Competing against others?
I also find it funny when these "do-our-hair-and-prance-around-in-short-skirts" teams get so defensive about cheerleading being a sport. I think it's not a sport unless you're actually competing against others. I can go to the gym and work out, but just because I work hard on the stairmaster for an hour doesn't mean that stairmastering is a sport!
I wish more schools (Christian especially) would have cheer squads that actually serve a purpose and work towards a goal - competing against other teams and winning. Otherwise their purpose is what? Eye-candy? That has interesting ramifications of it's own in the Christian education realm. If your cheerleaders are doing nothing but standing in front of hundreds of people in short skirts looking cute, then what are they benefiting the school?
Oyvey.
I could go on and on about this.
It really irritates me.
Not that you can tell or anything. :)
I'm just glad that you got Britney when we drove them all to the mall in PC!! THAT was something hysterical! I still laugh about that whole thing!
